Samford University is a private Christian University established in 1841. Its overall undergraduate admission is more than 3,000. It has a campus size of 212 acres. Samford University ranks as the 87th oldest university in the United States. It is Alabama's premier private institution. It has also been classified for academic programs and affordability by The Princeton Review and Kiplinger's Personal Finance.
History
The land used for founding Samford University in Marion, Alabama was pledged by Reverend James H. DeVotie. He was the President of the Board of Trustees for two years, but he served on the Board for fifteen years. The college changed into being coeducational in 1913. A tragic event happened in 1854 when a fire annihilated all of Samford University's properties. The university has just begun recuperating from the catastrophe when the Civil War broke out. In 1863, the Confederate government converted Howard College to a hospital that caters to the Federal Troops. For some time, soldiers and freed slaves sought fortress in Howard College's campus.
At the time of World War II, Howard College organized the V-12 Navy College Training Program, giving seafarers an opportunity to finish university education while in the military service. The number of veterans' admission increased significantly after the war.

Civil Rights
The passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act of the US Congress halted segregation rampant in private institutions. Cumberland School of Law accepted its first black student in 1967 after facing a great danger of forfeiting its accreditation. The university soon began integration following Audrey Lattimore Gaston, the first black student, was admitted.

Samford University offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees. The University has 10 academic schools that include arts and science, business, education, medicine, law, public health, and pharmacy. Classes are exclusively taught by full-time regular teachers with a ratio of 1:12, faculty-to-student. Athletics
The university plays 17 varsity sports and takes part in the NCAA, Division I level. The university is a member of the Southern Conference. Campus
Samford University was once located in Marion, Alabama. During that time, Samford was known as Howard College. It then moved to the East Lake community in Birmingham in the year 1887. At present, the university is found in downtown Birmingham in Homewood, Alabama. Its architectural structure is Georgian Colonial style, just as President Harwell Davis visualized it.
